Dealing with No Running
So if you read my last post, I’m sure you will know I was at a pretty low point. I had injured myself by straining the muscle in my groin which meant no running. To me, running is like putting pants on everyday, I just do it.
My friends and work colleagues have been very supportive of me though, and I have probably got fat as we have been going for more meals out and I haven’t been doing so much exercise. But I am still trying to be good.
I have been able to do some exercise, so it’s not like I have gone cold turkey, but I don’t find working out at the gym gives me the same ‘high’ as running. That being said, I have started to do this ab workout nearly everyday at home, and that is doing the trick. I mean, it can be tricky when I put the mat on the floor and my dogs decide it is a new bed for them, but it makes me laugh all the same! It isn’t the same as running, but I do feel great after doing it, so that is the way forward.
Obviously I hope to get back into running, and my physio has told me I can do running in the pattern of, for example, 3 minutes brisk walking, 1 minute jogging and so on. It will be hard to do it like this because I know I am fit enough to do more, and hell I will want to do more, but I can’t risk the progress I have made in my recovery. So for now, it is what it is.
Another way that I am ‘coping’ without my running routine is going for lots and lots of dog walks. That has helped, massively. I’m a country girl, so waking amongst the trees and fields is so lovely, especially this time of year when I can soak up the scent of harvest. So it’s not all bad.
Over and out for now, I’ve got to take the dogs for a walk...even though it’s raining! And if you are in the same boat as me, remember you aren’t alone. There are so many other people sewing with the anxiety of not being able to run or exercise.
