My Running Journey

So today is Global Running Day. Have you signed the pledge? Are you a runner? Well I am, only since February last year. But ever since then, I have been addicted.

Running has helped me massively, not just physically but mentally also. In February last year I went to a Saturday morning fitness class, and shocked myself at how much I struggled. I thought I was relatively fit, I took the dogs out in the afternoon everyday for a good half an hour. But turns out, that wasn’t enough. So, I embarrassed myself at how unfit I was and nearly passing out with being so out of breath.

So, after that, I thought enough is enough. I’ve got to do something to sort myself out. So, I realised I enjoyed the running warm up, so I went running one evening after work. 1k at a time, I eventually got there. It took a lot of runs where I had to stop to catch my breath, but I would set myself targets and try to stop at a place further than the last time, and eventually I got further, faster and fitter.

So, there’s the fitness and the weight management sorted, what about the mental health? I have always suffered from over thinking and always got down very easily. And never had a way of forgetting it or getting over things. Running is kind of my escape. I’m a country girl through and through, so running outside in the fresh air, and listening to the birds sing, the trees dance and smelling the amazing smells the outdoors gives. So yes, running is my escape from everything in my head. When I set off running, all I think about is how lovely it is to be outdoors, empty my head and see how far I can go today.

So there we go, that’s my running journey. So, after doing the Race for Life 5k last year, it just egged me on to go further and be better. I’m now at 10k and planning on doing a half marathon next year.

So if you’re struggling mentally or physically, or both, running is the way forward. Trust me? I’m living evidence! Or if you are a beginner runner, keep going, you’ve got this!
